About me
Ethan Hodgkins
Hello! I’m Ethan Hodgkins, a passionate production designer based in California with a deep love for art and storytelling...
Education and Biography
With an Associate's Degree in CTVR (Cinema, Television, and Radio) from Saddleback College, I’ve honed my skills so far across more than 20 student projects, with a particular focus on production design. Throughout this time in school, I held 12 production design-related roles, gaining hands-on experience while nurturing my passion for bringing visual stories to life.
Though I specialize in film production, I enjoy the world of TV production design as well. I thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with directors, cinematographers, and other creatives to craft immersive, visually compelling worlds. My process is driven by communication and adaptability, allowing me to take the director's vision and shape it into a design that supports the story while elevating the overall production.
My strongest skills lie in set design and prop creation, and I bring a keen eye for detail to every project I work on. I’m proficient in Photoshop, Blender, and a variety of 3D slicing programs, and I’m always eager to learn new tools and techniques to improve my craft. One thing that sets me apart is my ability to adapt creatively—whether it’s adjusting to a director’s evolving vision or finding solutions for unexpected challenges on set, I’m always ready to think outside the box.
The design process starts for me by diving into the script. I annotate and take notes to identify key production design elements, then brainstorm ways to bring those moments to life. From there, I collaborate closely with the director and cinematographer to align the design with their vision and the overall visual tone. I make it a priority to attend location scouts, ensuring that the space is factored into the design. Once the plan is in place, I work with my team to source props, dress sets, and get everything ready for the camera. I absolutely love the collaborative aspect of this process, and solving the creative puzzle of merging ideas into a cohesive whole is one of my favorite challenges.
Beyond production design, I’m a lifelong lover of art in all its forms—from performance music to cosplay. One of my proudest personal projects was crafting a prop gun for one of my cosplay builds. It was incredibly fulfilling to take a 3D design and, after hundreds of hours of hard work, turn it into a convincing, functional prop. This dedication to craftsmanship is something I bring to every project I’m a part of.
Looking ahead, I’m excited and hopeful to work on a wide range of projects, from TV series to feature films. I’m eager to continue learning and growing in the field, and I’d love the opportunity to understudy seasoned production designers to gain even more insight into the industry.
